PENTACLE THEATRE PRESENTS
"Steel Magnolias"
By Robert Harling
Directed by Jeff Sanders
August 20 - September 11, 2010
SALEM, ORE. - "Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion." - So says Truvy,
proprietor of a neighborhood beauty salon frequented by anybody who's anybody in
Chinquapin, Louisiana. Her small shop is the setting of "Steel Magnolias" which opens at Pentacle
Theatre on Friday, August 20.
The play was written by Robert Harling as an expression of a brother's grief over a sister
lost and as a testament to the strength and resiliency of the women of his hometown.
The Ladies of the Neighborhood come to Truvy's for equal
amounts of shampoo, styling and gossip. Each week Ouiser (pronounced " Weezer") Boudreaux, sporting the
town's worst mood, meets Clairee Belcher, former first lady of Chinquapin, and M'Lynn
Eatenton the "in control" wife, mother and social leader of the group for a
touch up and the latest news. Joining them is M'Lynn's daughter Shelby. The pretty
young nurse with a passion for pink is about to marry a handsome young southern lawyer and
longs for the day when she can add "mother" to her list of accomplishments. The
women, together with the earthy, wise, loving Truvy and her shop assistant and
semi-adopted daughter, Annelle, trade their southern verbal spears in a sense of fun.
Filled with hilarious repartee and revealing verbal
collisions, the play moves toward tragedy while drawing on the underlying strength and
love of it characters.
A cast of theatre veterans including faces both familiar to
Pentacle as well as new will bring Director Jeff Sanders' production to life. Robynn Hayek
plays Ouiser Boudreaux and Jennifer Gimzewski plays Clairee Belcher. M'Lynn Eatenton is
portrayed by Deborah Leinen; the pivotal role of Shelby is played by Geri Lyne
Greeno-Sanders. Truvy is played by J. Marie Bailey while Rachel Ost plays her
assistant Annelle.
As technical director
Tony Zandol is designing the small beauty salon with homey charm.
Costumes are by the Ladies of the Neighborhood.
