Rachel Duncan
Co-Director
Rachel went to George Fox University, where she performed in Big River, Little Women and the a capella singing group Dayspring. Rachel has worked as a music director or director for student shows through Children’s Educational Theatre, Blanchet Catholic School, and Walker Middle School, and was the drama director at Western Mennonite School for seven years. Rachel most recently directed the music for Pentacle’s scholarship fundraiser The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. She last performed in the quintet for City of Angels and played Hattie in Kiss Me, Kate! Rachel enjoys traveling and spending time with her new dog, Maggie. She lives in West Salem and has taught English at North Salem High School for three years.
Robert Salberg
Co-Director
Robert was born and raised in Spokane, Washington. In high school at McKay, he was involved either onstage or backstage in at least twenty productions. He is a graduate of Linfield College. His directorial credits with Children’s Educational Theatre include: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Co-Director), Schoolhouse Rock Live JR (Director), Oklahoma! (Co-Director), Bye Bye Birdie (Director). He was also the director for the Pentacle fundraiser, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Performance roles at Pentacle include City of Angels, Prince Dauntless in Once Upon a Mattress, and Herb in Godspell. He also played The Cat in the Hat in Gallery Theater’s Sueussical: The Musical. He travels to New York City each year in December and loves to run, so you might see him in Bush Park on his daily run. He is the drama teacher at Howard Street Charter School and the Co-Executive Director for Children’s Educational Theatre.
Heather Schwartz
Assistant Director
Heather has been involved with four previous productions at the Pentacle, but this is her first experience on the production side of things. She played Winnifred in last year’s Once Upon a Mattress, Bobbi/Gabby in City of Angels, and Vera in And Then There Were None. She has also performed with the University of Portland’s professional group, Mock’s Crest Productions, in several Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. Heather is a graduate of George Fox University, where she played Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music and Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress. Heather works at AKT Benefit Advisors, an insurance agency in Salem.
Ben Bailey
Melvin
Ben was born and raised in Dallas, Oregon. He started his involvement with Pentacle by playing drums for the 2004 production of Godspell. Since then he has been a chorus member in the Pentacle production of Kiss Me Kate, Sir Harry in Once Upon a Mattress, and Bobby in The Boyfriend. He was also in Lucky Stiff at Western Oregon University and was a Wickersham brother in the Albany Civic Theater’s production of Seussical: The Musical. Ben enjoys backpacking, drumming, dancing, hanging out with “Team Mojo,” and eating giant chicken burritos from Muchas Gracias. Ben currently works for Artisan Built Homes.
David K. Berrier
Basil Bennet
David was born in Salem but raised in northern California. He was in the 48 Hour Film Project “Dreemrz, Inc.” where he played the male lead, Richard Upright, in a short film. His Pentacle credits include Sir Luce in Once Upon a Mattress and Reverend Hopkins in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. He has six great kids, who are his greatest accomplishment, along with his marriage to his awesome wife, Susanne. He loves outdoor activities, political debate, haunted house design, his two funny dogs, and traveling with his family. He has a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s in geography. Dave owns Artisan Built Homes, a local construction firm specializing in period architecture and design.
Jenni Bertels
Luella Bennett
Jenni was born and raised in Osawatomie, Kansas. She was involved in several productions onstage and behind the scenes in high school and at her local community theater in Paola, Kansas. Credits include: Queen Aggravain in Once Upon A Mattress and ensemble roles in Kiss Me, Kate!, Hello, Dolly!, Carousel, and Funny Girl. She has been highly involved with the Pentacle as an Assistant Director, Stage Manager and a variety of other technical roles in City of Angels, Once Upon a Mattress, The Boyfriend, Misery, Miss Julie, and many others. Most recently she was seen onstage as Mrs. Clark in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Jenni would like to dedicate this performance to the memory of her husband Chris, who was her biggest fan and always encouraged her, supported her, and never complained about her being at the theater too much.
Jodi M. Deming
Goldie
Jodi was born and raised in Salem. At Sprague High School she played Freda in Splendor in the Grass and Agnes in I Remember Mama, and was student director for As You Like It. At Chemeketa she was Gwendolyn in The Importance of Being Ernest and at Willamette University she was a cop onstage and the backstage cat wrangler in Moonchildren, as well as stage manager for Women of Troy. Most recently, Jodi was helped backstage and did makeup for The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Jodi has been the stage manager for Oregon’s Jr. Miss Scholarship Program for several years and is Mrs. Oregon United States for 2007. Jodi is a paralegal for Mills & Jacobson, Lawyers PC.
Erin Howe
Jennie Mae
Layman
Born and raised in Salem, Erin is a senior at North Salem High School. She was Rita in the North Salem High student directed play, Saved by the Belle, in 2007. She has played violin for nine years and is a member of the North Salem Chamber orchestra and Bel Canto String Quartet. She loves the outdoors and participates in cross country, track, and swim team. She is applying to several liberal arts universities in hopes of studying environmental science, public health or the performing arts. This is Erin’s first Pentacle production.
Jay Howe
Ferris Layman
Jay was born in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and was raised in Salem. This is his second Pentacle production since the 1964 production of Life with Father, where he played Harlan. He was also in the 1972 production of Don’t Drink the Water at North Salem High School. Jay has been in the Portland Marathon for 22 years in a row. He also loves hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, and mountain climbing. He is a lawyer and has been with the same law firm in Portland for 25 years doing mostly estate planning.
Casey Magis-Agosta
Buddy Layman
Casey was born in Monmouth, Oregon, where he lived for a year before moving to Silverton. He played Tom Sawyer in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer with Children’s Educational Theater this last summer. Also, just before that, he played the character Slats in The Ballad of Gopher Gap. He also performed in Aladdin as Abanazar, the evil wizard, at Brush Creek Playhouse in Silverton. At the Pentacle, he recently played Elmer Hopkins in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. His main interest is theater which, combined with school work, keeps him pretty busy throughout the year. He loves hanging out with friends, watching movies, and plays the baritone saxophone in the high school jazz band. He is a freshman at Silverton High School.
Susan Needles
Norma Henshaw
Raised in Salem, Susan was involved in various productions at McNary High School and Whitaker Middle School. Susan’s first Pentacle production was in 1979, when she played June Stanley in The Man Who Came to Dinner. Since, Susan has played Sister Robert Anne in Nunsense and Sister Hubert in Nunsense II: The Second Coming. Most recently she was Lady Rowena in Once Upon a Mattress. She loves to travel and enjoys watching her son Shane play basketball. She also enjoys harassing her oldest son Sean (who lives in New York) about landing auditions. She most recently made a career change to work for the Salem Clinic. She lives in Salem with her son Shane and her husband (and best friend) Ed, with whom she has just celebrated 25 years of marriage.
Michael Swanson
C. C. Showers
Michael was born and raised in the Willamette Valley. He has been involved in several productions at Pentacle. Credits include: Wait Until Dark, Misery, and The Good Doctor. Michael claims to have way too many interests and hobbies and not nearly enough time to seriously devote to any of them. He is a computer tech in Salem.
Stacey Walen
Darlene Henshaw
This is Stacey’s first Pentacle production. She is a senior at North Salem High where she played Ilsa in Dressed to Kill, Snug in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Swing in Romeo and Juliet. She has been president of North’s theater club for two years. She is also an astronomy enthusiast (ask her about her 6 inch Dobsonian.) She loves unicorns, cows, and her friends Danny and Krista mean the world to her. She plans on attending Western Oregon University in the fall.
Eli Wilson Pelton
Dewey Maples
Born in Hanover, New Hampshire but raised in Salem, this is Eli’s first Pentacle production. Eli has been involved in “Night of Dramatic and Comedic Scenes” at Judson Middle School along with The Razor’s Edge at Young Musicians and Artists summer camp in 2007. He has also been involved in improv performances at both venues. Interests include snowboarding, eating Rice Krispies, and photography, where he hopes to expand his skills in the future.
